Roadside Geology of Montana; David Alt, pages 435.

Published by Mountain Press, here in Missoula, the Roadside Geology books are a perfect companion for those long drives through the mountain west. After reading one, you will want to collect the whole series.

The Roadside Geology of Montana explores the geology of Montana from the perspective of your car window. The books point out the names and history of the different geological formations you see on the major byways of the state.

You don't read the book from end to end, you read it road by road. If you are planning a trip through Montana, Idaho, Washington or where ever, you simply read the section about the road you are driving, and the geology will come alive.

Here in Missoula, you will read about ancient lake Missoula trapped behind a great ice dam, and how Lake Missoula would occasionally release its waters in a grand flood that would sweep across the Washington landscape. In Glacier you will read about the ice age, uplifts of mountains, etc..

The Roadside series is fascinating because you aren't just reading dry geologic text. The format of the book allows you to read about the geology that you can see. The format makes your road trip come alive as you learn more about this last best place.

For history buffs, Mountain Press also publishes a roadside history series.
